Daytimers will be visiting a little-known part of Chicagoland on September 9. They will travel to Big Marsh which is a 300-acre restored natural area on Chicago's southeast side.
It was long the site of a dumping ground for waste and slag from the nearby steel mills (all now closed). Local environmentalists in the late 1990s with help from Chicago State University (Bill Peterman from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Mark Bouman from Grace Lutheran Church) began a campaign to restore the area. In 2011 Chicago Park District acquired the property and in 2016 opened it as Big Marsh Park.
The Daytimers will meet at church at 10a. Lunch will be at a restaurant on the southside.
